Is facebook spam? What do you think?

Is Facebook Spam?

In my opinion it depends on what you use it for.  Some use this social utility for the simple purpose of keeping in contact with friends from a far.  A large percentage of facebook uses it for networking and promoting their business.  I’ve recently conducted some different polls with my groups and pages.  I compared these results with the same poll I took about a year and a half ago.

Here are my results.

Out of 3 groups that I messaged and requested and reply saying (yes) just to confirm the read. My response rate was 14% yes in 2008.  This same test with the same groups yielded a 3% yes this year in 2009.  What does this say?  This says that people are really getting tired of the overwhelming amount of crap in their inbox is what this says.  Like me I imagine most people look at the heading, see if they recognize the person, and if they don’t they just check the box and delete the message.

We also have 2 fan pages on Facebook.  In 2008 we had a 6% read rate conducting the same test (updates were not and never have been read like group messages). This year in 2009 our read rate was less than 1% on updates (this stat is only known from those that responded yes). Now we are doing exactly what our fan page says we will do.  We are saying that we will send out good information about marketing and design for people if they want to become a fan.  But for some reason I’ve found unless your famous it’s very hard to get good interaction with a fan page. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one.  Our fan page receives around 60 or more hits everyday just from link placement, curiosity, and being found on facebook search for pages. So it is very good to have a fan page and also renders good traffic to the website.

Here’s What I’m Tired Of!!!

Cause invitations that make no sense, mob stuff, this, that, whatever, gifts, drinks, chips, etc, etc, etc, etc….  That’s what I have to say about all the useless stuff that is on my home page when I’m on facebook everyday. I get so much useless stuff from people I don’t even know.  I think what’s happened is people think they can use any possible tactic to get traffic so they do all the different stuff.

If You Want To Be Successful on Facebook ‘Do This’

It’s simple, connect with people, have one on one interaction.  Make sure you’re interested in their profession and that they are interested in yours (this is if you don’t know them at first contact of course).  Then see if there is anything between the two business’s that has plausibility or can help.  Exchange some messages and let each other know about the groups and fan pages that each other have.  Do this one person at a time and you will slowly build a ‘good’ network’. People will actually read your messages and show interest about your business.  They will share your business with others that can benefit.  If there’s a way to work out an affiliate that is co-beneficial then do it.

So to answer my own question, yes, facebook is turning into spam.  But if people would network correctly then it wouldn’t.

I’m very interested to hear feedback from others about this subject so please comment and I will get back to your shortly.  My name is Larry Sowell and I’m the Marketing Director at Get2Marketing.com

Intro to Understanding Facebook

Facebook has over 400 million active users and is growing daily.  Facebook is a great social networking utility that can have an enormous impact on your websites products and services.  When using facebook you want to make the most out of all of your friends, groups, and fan pages.  There are specific techniques that help you make the most out of your facebook account. There are also critical things to not do on Facebook, and the most important thing to avoid is spamming.  People will look down on you for spamming and most of the time they will ignore what you have to say and show hardly any interest in what you do.  When trying to gain friends on facebook show interest in them.  Don’t overwhelm them with too many messages.  When sending a message to someone you want to tell them about yourself, also ask them a question or two so that you get some interaction with that friend.  There are four key factors for you facebook account, your personal profile, your groups, your page, and identifying important friends.

Join our Facebook fanpage here.

1.    Your profile is very important for several reasons. Be completely honest about your profile; don’t have a fake name, or the name of your business.  You can have groups and fan pages with these names. If people don’t trust you then they won’t do business with you.  Get personal with your profile; let the reader find out what you are all about. There are several applications on facebook which allow you to show a sneak peak of your website, a business card with a personal touch, places you’ve visited, family tree, and the list goes on and on. When building your profile add as many items as you can that are important to you and it’s something you want the reader to know about you. The last thing you want to do is overload your profile with too many applications, which will make it clouded and impossible to understand. Think of your facebook profile as a sneak peek into your personal life and business. Do you want people to think that you’re impossible to understand? Of course not, so keep it simple and clear. Apply the same kinds of thoughts into your profile as you would your website.

2.   Your groups are a place where you develop discussions, topics, and share ideas with people and businesses.  You want to have your own groups so that you can send interesting messages and comments to the people within your group.  Remember not to spam your group with tons of content about something they may not have an interest in at that timeWhen spamming you will notice that people are leaving your group because they are tired of all the messages.  This is also a good way to get your account disabled.  When forming groups for the purpose of your business remember to invite people to join that can help you network your group or those that are your target market.  You then can have fun events, discussions, competitions, and other forms of interaction to get the group involved with you and what you do.  Offer to talk with anyone about anything they would like.  Show interest in your group by constantly updating the news and making small changes or additions to your group’s profile.  This moves you up in the recently updated area for members and friends of members to see your group (this helps your group grow).

3.  Your fan page is important because this is where people become your fan.  Currently we have almost 1,700 fans on Facebook for our Get2Marketing fan page.  Your page is similar to your group except you don’t send messages to the members; you send updates to your fans.  You talk about your business and get very detailed with your fans about your products and or services.  If you have fans then they are interested in you and your business.

4.  Identifying important players within facebook is critical because they are a gateway for your business.  You will notice who out there is doing things on a big level and you want to chat with them to pick their brains (this will help you learn about what they are doing), they will communicate with you because all big time facebooker’s (as we like to call them), know that interaction is the key to getting traffic from the social utility.  So when forming a personal profile, groups, pages, remember to keep track of the big time facebooker’s.  If they ask you to join one of their groups join it.  They will notice this and join your groups as well.  Remember one thing, facebook is for socializing not so much advertising (that’s the purpose), so do as much socializing as you can without breaking the rules.  Also the most important thing to do is read the terms of use and do not break their rules (sometimes you can bend them but we don’t recommend this), they will disable your account and you will have to start all over. Intro to Youtube

Youtube has over 100 million users and over 14.8 billion videos online in January 2009 alone.  Owned by Google, You Tube is massively growing on a daily basis and helps business’s and people share videos to the whole world.  People use You Tube for personal or business reasons.  You Tube helps generate traffic for blogs or websites as well.  The disadvantage of You Tube is that you can only make a 10 minute video. This is not a big deal because if you’re advertising a product or service 10 minutes is more than ample time to convey your message.  You should have the viewer to your site within 5 minutes.  You can also use You Tube as a social utility and have friends, send messages, look at video responses, and share videos.  In order to get several views and show up among the top videos you usually need to have several views to get started.  By having lots of friends to share your videos with you will be able to get the word out.  One thing You Tube users must understand is the terms and conditions.  If you are not careful You Tube can deny your access at any time for any reason.  Then you must start all over again.

Intro to Twitter

We love Twitter, it’s like posting a daily journal of your life and letting people follow what you are doing.  You can be followed or follow those who you are interested in.  When you view someone’s profile you can see a complete journal and what they are doing every time they update.  You also have the option to reply to someones update, or send a private message. One of my favorite features with twitter is that you can integrate your update system into facebook.  For example if you update on your twitter profile it will also update on your Facebook profile.  This is good because people will see that you are a tweeter and probably track you down on Twitter if they have an account.  Twitter is fun, simple, and easy to use.

Intro to Linkedin

LinkedIn is one of the oldest social utilities out there with over 12 million users in 140+ industries.  There are ten key ways to utilize LinkedIn and increase your business and traffic.  If you utilize these features properly, this can become a good social network for you and your business.  Use LinkedIn to make connections, view profiles, and find out if you’re making the right or wrong decisions when choosing to use someones services for your business.  LinkedIn has good visibility through Google so by having an account and using it actively you increase your visibility when someones doing a search through a search engine.  Use LinkedIn to find out the credibility of someone or their company.

Intro to Digg

This is the largest blogging community online.  This social network is all about shout outs, profile views, and getting people to read your blogs.  You can view your friend’s activity, and see what everyone is doing.  You can search for blogs by category and learn all about anything you want.  There is also video blogging which has become very popular lately.  Google has recently purchased Digg for 300 million.  Similar to other social networks on Digg you can set up your websites, add photos, and track other activity.  To be effective in this network you need to be able to blog well and have the right friends reading about your blogs.  You want to have a targeted interest.  You can also integrate your Digg account with your facebook account and display your blogs through facebook profile.

Intro to Delicious

Delicious

Delicious is what it sounds like, delicious.  This is social bookmarking used to share bookmarks and interact with users while searching a search engine.  People that use this search engine get results from users within the community.  There are about 5 million active users at this time.  You can tag bookmarks with an assortment of keywords.  There are over 150 million URL’s bookmarked today.  You can also check out what other people are bookmarking. Setting tags on your bookmarks is a good way to help people find what you are wanting to share.  Delicious is all about tagging and sharing bookmarks within the Delicious community.

Top Reasons to Use Social Networks

1.    Increase your visibility.
By having connections, there is a better chance that people will view your profile first when searching to contact someone about business that pertains to your industry.
2.    Improve your connect-ability.
Make sure that you fill out a complete profile.  Include your past jobs, education, affiliations, and activities.  This should act as an executive biography.
3.    Enhance your Google Page Rank.
Because LinkedIn allows your profile for indexing from the search engines you can say specifically what you want people to know about you.
In order to do this, start up a public profile then use the full view option.  Make your public profile URL to be your own; don’t let it stay among a bunch of numbers.  This is a change you can make and will help improve your visibility.  When you make comments or are blogging include the link to your profile page, this will also help increase your visibility.
4.    Improve search engine results.
You can promote your website to the search engines along with any blog you may have.  The LinkedIn profile has a place for your company and website and this information is indexed through LinkedIn and visible to the search engines.
5.    Check references about a company.
LinkedIn has a tool where you can check on a company and see how long they have been around, what references they have, and what that company has to offer.
6.     Be in a relevant job search.
You can use an advanced search option of LinkedIn that will help you find people that do the same work as you.  For example if you’re a plumber you could search, pipes, toilet’s, facets, etc… and a list of people and where they work will show up in the results.
7.    Iron out your interview.
Use link in to cover up that awkward silence during a conversation.  Use similar interests or professional areas to make small talk.  Know all there is to know about your interview before you step up to the plate.
8.    Is the company healthy?
See how healthy a company really is.  View feedback from employees.  Gauge their responses and look at the company’s profile and how long they have been doing business.
9.    Is the industry healthy?
If you are going to invest a large amount of money into an online business, or business of any other sort, look into that industry on LinkedIn.  For example if you are going to get into the mortgage industry talk to other professionals and find out from them how hard it really is.  See and compare who made it and who didn’t.
10.    New startups.
You can use your network to track startups and see who’s adventuring into different realms of business and see if your services are right for them.
